Dubai’s stunning skyline, glittering coast and dramatic desert landscapes make the city a versatile location for filming.  World famous attractions – such as the Burj Khalifa – cement the city as a stand out destination for tourists and filmmakers.  We’ve put together a list of some of Dubai’s most filmed icons, many of which you can spot from the sky on a seaplane ride in Dubai.

Burj Khalifa stars in Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol (2011)
The Burj Khalifa stars in this high-octane stunt where Tom Cruise's character, Ethan Hunt, hangs off the Burj itself in Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol. The fourth instalment in the franchise, this is the biggest-budget blockbuster ever to be filmed in Dubai. The Burj Khalifa is un-missable on a seaplane ride in Dubai.

Dubai is often described as a futuristic city, so it’s no surprise that the cityscape features in sci-fi stalwart - Star Trek! Dubai’s Downtown and JLT neighbourhoods serve as a Federation Starbase known as YorkTown, which is encountered by the crew of the Starship Enterprise on their intergalactic journey.

Downtown Dubai and the Jumeirah coast star in Geostorm (2017)

Dubai’s desert stars in Syriana (2005)

George Clooney and Matt Damon starred in this tense drama, which intertwines numerous storylines, including a dubious oil company merger, an Arabian royalty visit and an assassination plot. While the storyline is set in Iran, the scenes were actually shot in Dubai. Director Stephen Gaghan decided that Dubai provided a perfect location to shoot many of the desert scenes, which are minutes from downtown.

The city of Dubai stars in City of Life (2009)

Emirati director Al F Mustafa presided over City of Life, the first major English-language feature film to be filmed wholly in Dubai. The film, which sees the lives of an Arab man, an Indian taxi driver and a Romanian flight attendant collide, is a perfect portrayal of Dubai's real-life multicultural demographic.

The Abu Dhabi desert stars in Star Wars Episode VII – The Force Awakens (2015)

While not technically in Dubai, it’s close enough. We know that several parts of the film were shot a short drive from Dubai. As part of the expansive set, a shuttle-like spacecraft, tower and life-sized market were all built in the Abu Dhabi desert.

Again, this is in Abu Dhabi but we thought we’d squeeze these in! Several scenes were shot inside Etihad Towers. However, the most recognizable will be the ones shot outside the Emirates Palace Hotel, which is easily visible on our popular Abu Dhabi scenic flight.
