While Dubai is a relatively young city, Arabic traditions are thousands of years old. Despite its futuristic skyline with towering skyscrapers, Dubai still has strong ties to its nomadic desert heritage.
Discover the real history and culture of the city with these fascinating Dubai heritage tours with a difference.
Cultural heritage tours
The Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding runs several heritage programmes and tours which explore local culture. They offer two group tours. The shorter tour takes in the Al Farhidi district and Dubai Creek in the historical heart of the city. As part of this tour you can see original architecture in the traditional Emirati neighbourhood of Bur Dubai, and visit the Diwan Mosque. The longer tour includes a traditional ‘Abra’ boat ride and visits to the gold, textile and spice souks.
Both tours finish with coffee, tea and dates for an authentic Arabian experience. Note these tours are seasonal and do not operate over the peak of summer (July – August). The centre does offer other cultural activities year-round including mosque visits and hosting traditional Arabic meals. Visit www.culture.ae for more information.
